apprenticeship opportunities

At its regular November 2020 meeting, the Hardin County Board of Education approved student apprenticeship opportunities in Hardin County Schools.

“We have plenty of ways to provide meaningful work experiences for those who would like to work in high-demand career fields right here in the district,” HCS Superintendent Teresa Morgan said.  “We have traditionally asked our community business and industry partners for those opportunities – and we will continue to do so.  We are now going to also provide valuable workplace training that will allow students to be certified for employment in several areas of our district, the community, the state and across the globe.”

These positions will allow students to combine the instruction received in HCS career pathway courses with on-the-job training to earn their journeyman’s certification and become certified in careers that are in high demand.  They will also help students who are not planning to attend college to finish jobs with skills and certifications that allow them to continue employment in that specific industry at an experienced and certified rate.

The areas will include but are not limited to, diesel mechanic, Information Technology help desk technician, early childhood education development specialist and building repair/maintenance.  Students will begin their apprenticeship at $7.25 per hour and work toward certified entry-level pay based on the approved salary schedule with paced increments based on their successful number of hours worked toward their completed apprenticeship.

Apprentices will receive an increase when their hours are completed in 25% increments.  They will reach entry-level pay once all of the hours are finished and they are certified as a journeyman in their field with the National Department of Labor.

Each apprentice will also qualify as “career-ready” under Kentucky School Accountability upon entry into the apprenticeship program.

There is a video on the HCS website (www.hardin.kyschools.us) titled “HCS Apprenticeship Opportunities” under the Parents tab and Students tab at the top of the webpage.
