JHHS Career & Technical Education

Introduction

Over the past year and a half there has been many changes to the Kentucky Assessment & Accountability System.  The passage of Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) in 2009 has brought a new system to Kentucky starting in the 2011-12 school year. The new Kentucky School Testing System is designed to improve teaching and student learning in Kentucky.  The new system will focus on how well students are prepared for college or a specific career by the end of high school.  Based on certain benchmarks that must be achieved each high school student should be designated as college ready, career ready, or both before graduation.  A school's state accountability score will be determined based on the number of students within each school achieve one or both of these status goals.  Each school will receive one point towards their overall accountability score for each child meeting benchmarks for being either college or career ready.  If a student meets the bench marks in both of these areas then a school will receive an extra 1/2 bonus point towards their total accountability score.  With this new system a greater emphasis will be placed on Career & Technical Programs within schools to help prepare students for a chosen career field and achieve "Career Readiness" status.

Career & Technical Education

Kentucky Career & Technical Education programs over the years have provided many students with the opportunity to prepare for careers in several different career pathways.  At John Hardin a student can enter into a sequence of classes in the fields of Business, Marketing, Agriculture, Technology, or Family & Consumer Science that will prepare them to meet the benchmarks set forth by the state to be considered "Career Ready".  In order to meet these benchmarks a student must complete a sequence of courses within one of the specific career pathways and pass an industry readiness exam within that field before graduation.  The majority of the courses offered in Career & Technical Education are elective classes that students can choose to enter at the beginning of high school and complete before graduation.  Many students will choose their elective courses randomly throughout their high school careers.  With these new standards, our goal is to provide students with advice and direction that will allow them to choose a sequence of courses within a career pathway to better prepare them for a career field that will interest them and allow them to be competitive in a constantly changing job market.

College & Career Readiness

The following chart outlines the benchmarks set forth by the state of Kentucky in order for a student to be considered college ready, career ready, or both.  John Hardin provides many opportunities for students to be successful in both areas.

KOSSA Testing to Determine Career Readiness

In order for a student to be tested in a career area they must complete a certain number of courses in a given career major and then will take the "Kentucky Occupational Skills Standards Assessment " (KOSSA) within that specific area.  For each area tested students will take a 100 multiple choice question exam and complete one open response question.  In order to score proficient students must score a minimum of 70% on the multiple choice exam and score a proficient or distinguished on the open response.  Students who achieve this minimum score will receive a certificate in areas they pass and will be recognized at senior awards night in the spring.  For every student that passes the KOSSA test the school will receive credit towards it's accountability and a 1/2 bonus point if they have achieved "College Readiness" status.

Career Majors Available at JHHS

The following tables outline courses & career majors available through the Career & Technical Department at John Hardin.  Each table outlines the sequence of courses available and what should be taken to complete a specific career major.  Students that complete a career major will receive a diploma certificate from the State Department and will be eligible to receive credit hours throughout the Kentucky Community College Network within the state.  Completion of these courses will help prepare students for a career &/or college within each career field.
